INTERVIEWING TIPS
Pre-Interview:
PERCEPTION - Unless a hiring authority has previous knowledge
of your skills and background, please remember that the first impression
that you will be evaluated by is your verbal and written communication.
Be sure that all written communication with a potential employer
is proof read prior to submission. Correct errors in spelling and
grammar. In phone conversations, be pleasant; get the salient points
of the available position to ensure that the position is appropriate
for you to learn more about. Make sure that the scheduled interview
time is convenient regarding your schedule. Know the directions
to the location of the interview, confirmed day and time, interviewer's
name (pronunciation) and contact numbers. Find out the standard
dress code for the employer and dress appropriately. Learn all you
can about the company you are interviewing with and industry trends
regarding the company. Prepare questions to ask during the interview
including the responsibilities, requirements and challenges of the
position, career development opportunities, company culture, financial
fitness and future of the company. Try a dress rehearsal of your
interview either thorough mock or virtual interviews or by reviewing
past career accomplishments. Be positive and polite upon entering
the company for the interview.
The Interview:
Enjoy yourself. Greet the interviewer in an up beat manner. Maintain
eye contact. Be YOURSELF. Be truthful. You are being interviewed
to see if your background "fits" the need of the organization.
Remember that you are also investigating the company, position and
interviewer to see if there is a "fit" regarding your
professional and personal needs. You would like this to be a dynamic
exchange of information so be thorough and concise in answering
questions. Do not represent your present or former employers in
a negative light. Try to get to know the interviewer. Ask them about
their background and what they are looking for in a candidate. Make
sure that you understand the current position needs and responsibilities
COMPLETELY. Ask for clarification on any points that you
are unclear. Get a fix on the companies culture and financial status.
Find out the status of the search and timing of a decision. If the
interview has gone well in your estimation and the position is of
interest to you, make sure that the interviewer is aware of this.
Ask the interviewer for their business card. Thank the interviewer
for their time and consideration.
Post Interview:
While the interview is fresh in your mind, note your impressions
and thoughts. Send thank you letters as soon as possible with spelling
and titles correct.
RESUME TIPS
Preparing Your Resume for Interviews
- You should provide a "clean" original, and use a standard
style when creating your resume.
- Some other helpful resume hints:
- Use white or light-colored 8 1/2 x 11" paper
- Provide a laser quality original if possible to the interviewer
- Use standard fonts such as Times or Courier
- Use a font size of 10 to 14 points that is easy to read
- Place your name at the top of the page on its own line
- Add your address information just below your name
- Use boldface and/or all capital letters for headings
Things to Avoid:
- Avoid fancy treatments such as italics, and shadows
- Avoid vertical and horizontal lines, graphics, and boxes
- Avoid two-column formats
Advice on "Key Words"
Recruiters and managers access the resume database in many ways,
either to search your resume or search for specific experience.
Here are a few tips to get your resume noticed:
- Use common heading such as: Objectives, Experience, Employment,
Work History, Skills, Affiliations, etc.
- Be concise and truthful
- Use enough key words to define your skills, experience, education,
professional affiliations, etc.
- Describe your experience with concrete words rather than vague
descriptions
- Use more than one page if necessary
- Increase your list of key words by including specifics
- If room allows, describe your interpersonal traits and attitude
- Use jargon and acronyms specific to your industry (spell out
the acronyms)
NOTE: Most resumes are kept for one year. |
